Ganglion Impar Block
A Ganglion Impar Block is the injection of a local anesthetic around a group of nerves in the sacrococcygeal (tailbone) area.
Why is a Ganglion Impar Block performed?
A Ganglion Impar Block may be performed if you have sympathetically mediated pain involving the perineum and genital area, specifically of a burning or urgent nature. Patients with perineal pain may experience pain involving the areas of the cervix, colon, bladder or endometrium.
What happens during the procedure?
You will be placed in the prone position (face down) on the table in the fluoroscopy room. Your back will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution and sterile drapes will be placed. The area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. The doctor will use fluoroscopy (a special x-ray) to guide the placement of a thin needle to the area of the involved sacrococcygeal junction. After correct needle placement is confirmed by x-ray, a local anesthetic will be injected. A dressing will be applied at the injection site.
How long does the procedure take?
Approximately 20 minutes.
Contraindications for procedure
Bleeding problems, infection, pregnancy or
uncontrolled LOW blood pressure.
